In the field of nursing, various nursing theories have been developed to help define the nursing practice. One of these theories is the Theory of Interpersonal Relations by Hildegard Peplau. Developed in 1952, this theory identifies four phases which are seen important in the interpersonal relationship which is formed between the nurse and the patient. To enumerate, the phases are orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution. Each phase shows the progress of the relationship between the nurse and the patient, with orientation being the first meeting of the two and resolution being the last. In this theory, it has been assumed that the nurse plays six different roles, namely, a stranger, a teacher, a resource person, a counselor, a surrogate, and a leader. The Theory of Interpersonal Relations, however, has its own share of drawbacks. For one, it does not emphasize promotion and maintenance of health. Moreover, it does not mainly consider social resources.

EMT Training at a Morgue

One of the most interesting parts of my EMT Training was when we traveled to a morgue. This was the ultimate test by our instructors to see how we handled being around freshly dead bodies. The staff members cut open bodies, and showed us different organs so we could understand trauma wounds and educate ourselves further. A few people got very sick and this was part of the test. They needed to make sure we could handle being exposed to the smell, texture, and look of some of this stuff. We also had to de-tach ourselves emotionally and realize that these were no longer people anymore, they were cadavers. It’s very hard to do that because it goes against many of the things we have been taught. As a medical professional, and especially as an EMT, your focus is on saving and protecting the living and this is all part of the conditioning of EMT training.

After I graduated from high school I decided that I did not want to go to a traditional college. This did not leave me with many choices for a job so that is why I started to consider going to one of these sonography schools. I have heard of a lot of people in my area who got trained in this skill and then went on to get a very nice job in the health care field. Really, I always wanted to be a doctor but I knew that I would never have good enough grades for something like that. I hope that I get accepted and can start attending classes for this program really soon. It would be nice to quit my part time job and move out of my parents’ house once I have a really good career in sonography established. That would allow me to afford a lot more.
